Copy: Puerto Penasco is a convenient four-hour drive from both Phoenix and Tucson, making it easy for you to escape to your haven whenever your whim arises.
Directions from Phoenix
- Get on the I-10 West going in the direction toward Buckeye.
- Take Exit #112 marked State Route 85 South (going toward Gila Bend/I-8 San Diego).
- Continue through Gila Bend and turn right just before McDonald's at the sign for Mexico/SR 85 South.
- Continue south on SR 85 to Ajo (approximately 39 miles).
- Continue on SR 85 through Ajo to Why, AZ (approximately 10 miles).
- Continue on SR 85 through Why to Lukeville, AZ (approximately 27 miles).
- To cross the border, drive forward to the crossing station and note the traffic light. If the light is green, you are free to proceed with caution; if red, you will be waived into a parking space. If you are pulled over for inspection, you will likely be on your way in less than a few minutes.
- Once you cross the border, you will be in Sonoyta, Mexico. Please heed the speed limit signs in town, which will be shown in kilometers rather than miles per hour.
- After about 1.8 miles, you will arrive at a three-way intersection with a stop sign ("ALTO" in Spanish). You will see a monument and signs for PTO Penasco and Santa Ana to the left. Turn left at the stop sign and then bear right, following the signs to PTO Penasco.
- Stay to the right (towards Puerto Penasco/Caborca) at the Y. Do not follow the sign to San Luis or Santa Ana. There is a traffic light soon after you bear right. Continue straight through this traffic light to Mexico Highway 8.
- Once you are through town, continue on Highway 8 from Sonoyta to Puerto Penasco (approximately 60 miles).
- Upon entering Puerto Penasco, continue straight to Fremont Street, and then turn left. (City Hall is immediately on the southeast corner of this major traffic light intersection.) Continue east on Fremont for 8 miles. Turn right at the posted "Villa Cortez" sign and proceed to the beach (4.8 miles). At the beach, turn right and proceed 3.4 miles to the project.

- Get on the Interstate 10 until you reach Interstate 19 South.
- Drive for approximately 1 mile and then exit onto State Route 86 (also called Ajo Highway).

A new coastal highway is currently under construction. Built to facilitate travel between Southern California and all of the Sonoran Coastline on the Sea of Cortez, it will enable San Diegans to reach Puerto Penasco in a mere 41/2 hours. Completion of Phase One of the project is currently scheduled for late 2006.
